You are probably running into the same problem I had: the disk may need to
be freshly formatted. NetBSD's RAM disk kernel can't do this at present.

The "short read" may occur because the tape driver is failing to
handle the QIC drive properly. Sometimes it can be circumvented by writing
a tape with shorter or longer blocks, but sometimes not. The Archive/Emulex
combination on my Sun 3 always worked under SunOS but does not work under
NetBSD.
