I just wanted to mention that I've seen this problem too on the diskless
sun3/50 and 3/160's I run too.  I got around it by statically linking the 
things I really needed run to login to the machine ( telnetd, csh, etc).

The only way I ever got it to clear up though, is by rebooting.
