Just a comment on the following:

I use NetBSD diskless every day on a 3/160 (I think) and it works very well.
Running on a 3/50 works almost as well, but one of my friends ran into
a bug which he said was caused by *swapping* over the network... I haven't
experienced this firsthand.

I think it'd be fairly stable. YMMV.
