I'm using Minicom, should I be using something else?

Odd.  I don't recall having such problems with Prolific adapters on
penguin-OS (but my experience is limited to gNewSense on a Lemote
YeeLoong).  Penguin-OS can drive a KeySpan USA-19HS just fine and it
will send a BREAK when so instructed.

Prolific adapters send BREAK just fine under NetBSD.
