It's still XFree86.

No and no.
I managed to get Xorg 7.0 to work but more recent versions don't work  
at all. And better than XFree86 - well, it has the composite and  
damage extensions but their ffb driver is rather buggy even if you  
can get it to work.

No. You have to use the firmware:
setenv output-device screen:r1600x1200x60
reset-all
...should do it.
