The onboard controller in the U5/U10 is not capable.  I think the
story is, in Solaris it caps drives to 128GB, and in NetBSD it will
work with larger drives but only at unacceptably slow speeds.

I've had very bad experience with IDE controllers in noti386 hardware.
You may have to try a couple different PCI adapters to find one that
works.

Believe it or not, what _doesn't_ give me any trouble is burning CD's
in the U10, running Solaris with the crappy onboard CMD/Sil IDE.  That
works perfectly, although it tops out at about 6x for DVD burning
(with the source image on firewire or NFS).  but IDE disks---I give
up.  I'll use SCSI/NFS, or wait for the iSCSI initiator, rather than
struggle with it more.

As you can see from the thread, others have better experience.
