Which ffb variant do you have? I've been unable to reproduce it in an 
xterm - only in things like konsole or Terminal which use anti-aliased 
text.
Another data point - I've seen similar distortion when dabbling with 
the registers that control alpha blending in the kernel driver but I've 
been unable to find out why it happens in X.
