Yes. The kernel can determine the device it was booted from and then it
tries to mount the root FS from this device. You can try to boot with
the flag "-a". The kernel will ask for the root FS to mount, then you
can enter "wd1a" by hand. To automate this you will need to modify the
kernel config as above and rebuild the kernel.
