unfortunately, we don't know of one.  I haven't had any time to
analyze the trap handling to see how to fix it right, either.
when I get back from my vacation I'll see about undoing enough
of the pmap optimizations to avoid triggering this problem
as a interrim step.  that shouldn't be hard.
