It occurs to me: doesn't that machine have 2 HME chips in it?  You may
want to try using the other one, since the mapping between device instance
and hardware is sometimes incorrect.

	Good thought.  I just tried. ifconfig, the good one, shows that hme0
is status: active, and hme1 is status: no carrier.
This is consistent with the way the box is connected to the network, and
since I net booted the kernel through the active one, I assume the hardware
is fine.  So, I guess we're back to the drawing board.  Too bad I can't get
a newer 1.5-current kernel to boot.
