No.  It used to, but since this started, that chip hasn't worked
anywhere.  (Admittedly, I haven't tried it in anything but an SLC or
ELC; I'm not sure I've got anything else it would fit any longer.)

The thing that surprises me is that the NVRAM chip is _capable_ of
wedging the whole machine even before early POST prints anything.

That's on my list to try.

Fairly sure.  The board silkscreen has a notch at one end; I make sure
that end gets pin 1, where pin 1 is marked by the small circular
depression in the case plastic and also is the conventional lower-left
corner when the chip is held with its printing upright.

Besides, that's the same orientation that worked fine with the previous
day of attempts.
