Kind of a side note but Rob Landley's Toybox has a tiny read only git implementation being worked on. It has a few other useful on small systems things in there too especially as the implementations are sometimes smaller... they won't always be faster though as some are naive implementations. The tiny git implementation probably isn't bug free but at least it exists. 

Also advantageous is that it's released under 0BSD.
