Over on port-vax, Ragge just recently (2023-09-24) mentioned that
IIRC the 1.2 distribution took 11 days to compile, and 2
additional days to gzip the distribution files.
This in response to my talking about my VAX emulator, which has now
been chewing on a build of the 1.4T world for 11 days 3h 42m 10.36s as
of the last log line it printed. bqt remarked that "[my] emulation is
a bit slower than an 11/785, it sounds like. Maybe close to an 11/780".
I'm not sure running an emulator for two weeks counts as "heroic" -
it's not, after all, actual old hardware - but I won't decline any
admiration you want to throw my way :-)
The oldest real hardware I run routinely these days is SS20s. Those
are a good deal faster; doing a build (of basically the same tree[%])
took 7h 37m 1.14s on one of my SS20 (RT620/625 @ 125MHz), 12h 0m 55s on
another (TMS390Z50 v0 or TMS390Z55 @ 50 MHz).
[%] The same tree except for some fixes applied to get it to build on
the VAX; once the VAX build completes - assuming it completes without
trouble! - I'm going to merge the two trees together.
