Hello,

When I say: "X -configure", not only does it die, it reboots!

That is a hardware bug - whenever you read the 2nd half of the graphics chip's config space you get an NMI storm. I thought that was fixed in time for 4.x so it will only slow things down instead of resetting the machine.

The error, of course is:

netbsdPciConfRead: failed on ttyE00

There is no native driver for the chip and even if there was it wouldn't do much good since there is no usable blitter either, all we can do is a hardware sprite for the mouse pointer.

Would anyone care to comment on the way to proceed from here?

Should I move to Xorg?

If you're using 5.x or -current you're already using X.org.

Either way, grab a sample config, change the graphics driver to wsfb, remove all references to video modes and set DefaultDepth to 8, that should give you at least working X. The igsfb driver in -current should give you 16bit colour but I had no chance to test it on a Krups.

have fun
Michael
