Hrm...  I didn't look that far into the procedure, so I don't doubt you at all. 
 I know I've done firmware updates from command line before under Solaris, but 
they were most likely for Ultra class machines.

I'll have to take inventory of what I have, then see what works with NetBSD 
as-is.
