you know, i don't know what you're talking about when you claim
that xfree 4.x and xfree 3.x are vastly different.

xfree 4.x still shipped with Xsun etc, and we used those in 
netbsd 4.x and the non-xorg 5.x platforms.

modular-xorg-server, the current generation, does suffer from
the problem that you're taling about, but not any xfree86.
