I don't know, and since this can lead to problems because it effectively ci=
rcumvents pkgsrc's version handling I don't think there is one. The sole re=
ason I did this was that pkgsrc and XFree each come with their own versions=
 of a bunch of libraries which seem to collide sometimes. This shouldn't ha=
ppen though.

You can easily see which packages support USE_BUILTIN - they all have a fil=
e named builtin.mk in their directory.
