The response to ping is implemented in the kernel. So if you cannot ping
the sparc 5 from another machine on the same subnet, then the problem is
with the network interface configuration or the sparc-5 is not even
running NetBSD.

  It's often possible to find an old "dumb" terminal for very little
money, if not free.  Depending on the serial cable, you might also need a
nullmodem adapter.
