I've run ctwm on everything I use for a very long time now. it's
extremely lightweight, quite fast, very featureful and easily
customized, and it works well on monochrome, greyscale, 8-bit and
greater displays.

As I say, it's _VERY_ tiny. I've had a copy running since mid-Nov now
on my main desktop machine and it's still sitting well under 2MB. Note
that it's a static-linked copy too:

$ ps -up 2276
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TT STAT STARTED TIME COMMAND
woods 2276  0.0  1.0 1572 1256 ?? SNs  19Nov04 23:30.04 ctwm -k -display very.w

$ file /usr/X11R6/bin/ctwm
/usr/X11R6/bin/ctwm: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, SPARC, version 1 (SYSV), for NetBSD, statically linked, not stripped

That's with 8 workspaces, lots and lots of menus, and it's managing
quite a large number of windows too:

$ wc -l .ctwmrc
    1476 .ctwmrc

Also, FYI, here's the top of "top" output from my workstation:
