Consider building a custom sun4c kernel for your SS1+,
i.e. remove support for the sun4 and sun4m. Although I don't
have the timings for a full build, I built my custom kernel
twice, once while running the GENERIC kernel from my original
installation, and then another full build (I removed the old
build directory, so that no steps would be skipped) while running
the new sun4c only kernel.

The timings for these two jobs were:
  15026.233u 59106.576s 22:01:43.68 93.4% 0+0k 49+11109io 2842pf+93w
  14239.898u 11881.320s 7:53:09.08 92.0% 0+0k 37+8849io 2899pf+86w

From more than 22 hours, to just under 8 hours. Quite a difference ...
