Don't know if this helps, but I had a JAZ drive that I couldn't mount until=
 I installed a disklabel on it. This was on the generic 1.6/sparc kernel.

SPARCstation 1+ this evening.  I can boot the install diskette, and
dmesg seems to recognize the Zip drive as sd1, but I can't seem to
mount it: 'Device not configured' I think it said, which I'm guessing
means that Zip support is not compiled into the generic kernel.
