i have commited fixes for the "no default kernel" problem.  it *should*
be fixed in 1.6.1 (i am waiting for releng to perform pullups.)

the problem was two fold.  not only was a kernel not installed by default,
it would be re-created as a points-no-where-symlink afterwards!
