The experts can correct me, but AFAIK, there are two basic upgrade paths
(both now discontinued):

1) Weitek SparcUp chip- clock-doubled CPU which replaces the existing
processor chip. This leaves your system as a Sun4c, just faster.
2) Cycle 5 motherboard upgrade- replaces the motherboard with a Sparc
5-compatible one of the correct form factor for your box. The resulting
system is now a sun4m-class system.
