Some tips:

. you can use xev(1) to snoop on the generated X events
. Xsun uses XKB, you can try to dump the current xkb info with xkbcomp
  (hint: use $DISPLAY as the source)
. you can try to run Xsun with XKB disabled, use -kb switch to the server
