that was exactly it.  Though, diag didn't' catch it.  I removed half the memory and everything worked like a champ!

Run the memory tests from the OpenBoot monitor.
Have it test *all* of memory (the power up tests often only test
the first meg or so..)

I ran 1.5.2 on a SS1+, SS2, LX, IPC and Classic without
any problems.
