ok, i'm sort of getting the idea that it doesn't. but i thought it did, since
ever since i have started using ISC DHCPD, i haven't touched /etc/ethers. so
if i'm not putting MAC addresses in /etc/ethers, and only putting hardware
ethernet MAC; directives in /etc/dhcpd.conf, what is being used? bootp?
well, why has this stopped working? i know i have netbooted this LX from
my dhcpd setup, in fact, i did it before i shipped it to my brother's house
to be firewall, and just recently to netboot and install NetBSD on the sparc2
that is currently at my brother's house as firewall replacing the LX which lost
its disk.

so i netbooted and installed this machine and another sparc, from the very
U1 that is giving me trouble now. but how did i do it? i'm stumped.
