That may be why.  I had "older" machines that were stable too, but only
the lightly loaded ones.  Does it survive a "make build" (or build.sh,
if that was there in 1.5.2)?

I never saw the _kernel_ crash, only userland processes.  And in some
circumstances, you may not even notice, or write it off as a random
application failure (I did that with the X server at the time of the
crashes I mentioned; it was only later, in retrospect, that I realized
that X on other machines wasn't doing it).
