Thanks, done that and it does come up now.

Do you have a pcmcia modem in it?
If so what is needed in the kernel configuration to bring it up?

At booting a message about the modem card came up, but I see nothing in 
dmesg. Is it also necessary to mknod some new devices i.e com* ?
