Ah, hrm.. if you can get docs on the p9000 it might just be a matter
of the correct initialization code. Given that you see the prom
based messages, i think there might still be a way to get the
console to use that all the time instead of switching. Ideally, tho,
you'd want the correct p9000 code in the kernel.
