That's an old pointer to an array of functions returning pointers to
arrays of cans of worms that we really don't want to open() right now...

...!  That's a question.  I've seen this reported before; is the
beginning really the fastest (-responding) part of the disk?  I mean, if
you end up running mostly in the middle of the disk, for example, aren't
seek-and-reads to either end going to run at the same speed?
