That is not my experience.

I've got a lot of 72-pin RAM.  A little of it is 36-bit and much of it
is 33-bit, but there's also a lot that's 32-bit.  And at least some of
my machines work fine with the 32-bit stuff (though, as you point out,
memory errors cannot generally be detected).
