do

  dmesg | grep cd

and look for your cd device.  For example:

115 % dmesg | grep cd
cd0 at scsibus0 targ 4 lun 0: <MATSHITA, CD-R   CW-7503, 1.08> SCSI2
5/cdrom removable


so on this system, its not /dev/cdrom, but /dev/cd0a
