I normally just drop into the prom to format scsi disks.  (Luckily all
the Sparcs I have and the adaptec scsi controller on the x86 both have
firmware-based format tools.

I don't know if any of the format programs work under netbsd.  I did
briefly look the last time I needed one.  I finally decided I was
wasting far too much time and just dropped to the prom and did it from
there.
