Not sure if it helps, but have you tried using ip addresses only ?
i.e. like 
192.168.0.85 root=ip.of.nim.rod:/lollie/home/NetBSD_Sparc

I notice this is a private address. Are you sure rarpd and bootparamd
are bound to the right interface on the server ?
