That's a pretty good guess, but Sun hardware of that vintage (or anything
else with AUI) is not full duplex capable.  AUI is the interface between
the Ethernet MAC and tranceiver (MAU), and in the olden days the tranceivers
only spoke the original coax Ethernet, where only one station could talk
at a time.

In theory you could do full duplex over AUI, but it would be non-standard
and non of the AUI speaking MACs would be likely to support it.
