I've had similar problems back when i first installed linux on my
Sparcstation 4. There is no xf86config because, in general, sparcs don't
need it. Unlike PCs, sparcs seem to be able to give X all the information
it needs in order to make X work. Sparcs generally have a much more
narrow range of valid color depths, resolutions and refresh rates. If X
doesn't work, its most likely not a problem that could be fixed with
xf86config. Make sure you're not trying to run Xsun24 (24 bit color X
server) on a system that can only support 8bit color (which was my problem
on the SS4).

Good luck
