I seem to recall rumours that the original X11R{4,5,6} (not sure which)
Xsun24 worked fine with 24bpp on sparc-20s under SunOS-4 (and maybe
Solaris).  Perhaps if you can find someone to confirm/deny this the
problem could be fingered a little more directly.
