Once I had corrected my stupidity the result was success.

Perhaps someone would like to update INSTALL and/or the web site to
clarify that multiprocessor machines *do* work, just without any
SMP functionality.

Although I do notice a GENERIC.MP kernel config, I presume this is
just experimental?
