It should work just fine without the keyboard, and use ttya as the
console. (The monitor, if you leave it plugged in, remains blank.)
Do you see nothing at all come out of ttya (at 9600/8/N/1)?

You could try bringing it up to the OpenBoot console with the
keyboard and monitor attached, and

    setenv diag-switch? true

Then you should see lots of diagnostic output from ttya.
