I would suspect it may be because firmware isn't doing some
initialisation that normally needs to be done on the SCSI controller.
Why just turn your Classic X into a real Classic by tweaking the
NVRAM bits mentioned in the NVRAM FAQ? (I've done this, and NetBSD
runs fine on my ex-Classic-X.)
