Yes, im following up my own message, got an additional data point.
It might not be hardware. [#-(

If anyone has any ideas on debuggin this further let me know. This
was a machine that I was hoping was going to make it to USENIX.

I loaded Solaris 2.6 onto this machine and attemped to pull a bunch
of stuff in from over the network.

# uname -a
SunOS ss20 5.6 Generic_105181-05 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCstation-20
# fsck /export/home
** /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s7
** Last Mounted on /export/home
** Phase 1 - Check Blocks and Sizes
** Phase 2 - Check Pathnames
** Phase 3 - Check Connectivity
** Phase 4 - Check Reference Counts
** Phase 5 - Check Cyl groups
3 files, 10 used, 4170148 free (20 frags, 521266 blocks,  0.0% fragmentation)
#

At the same time i telneted in and ran from an NFS mounted volume:
$ cat * > /dev/null
$ du -k
26049   .
