Hello fellow port-sparc users. I have a question which is not
immediately a NetBSD question, but whose answer will eventually get me
using NetBSD on a Sparc.
I have just acquired a Sparcstation 1 with 12MB of RAM and a Weytech CPU
upgrade. The NVRAM battery is dead and it won't boot. I believe these two
facts are related, but I am currently confused about why it won't boot.
Here are the symptoms.

After it goes through the self tests and diagnostics, it stops at a ">"
prompt. At this point, if I type:
b sd(0,0,0) -s
it says:
Probing memory banks 12345
Illegal instruction
OK

If I switch to new command mode, and try the various diagnostic tests, all
go well until I try the test-net command.
OK test-net
Probing memory banks 12345
Illegal instruction
OK

The same thing happens if I try booting from the new command mode:
OK boot sd(0,0,0) -s
Probing memory banks 12345
Illegal instruction

OK boot sd(0,6,0) [attempted boot of a SunOS CD]
Probing memory banks 12345
Illegal instruction
OK

Here are my questions.

1. Even though the NVRAM is hosed, shouldn't the machine boot anyway?

2. Can anyone explain why the test-net and the boot commands might yield
this similar message?

3. Could there be an incompatibility between the Weytech chip and the PROM
version on the board? (This is ROM revision 1.3)

Any helpful advice/answers would be greatly appreciated. Also, thanks for
your time, I know it's valuable!
