I don't know exactly what the problem is here (and the fact
that my ethernet is funny (see last message) prevents me from logging
on and checking it for myself), but recent to me (960626) kernels give
me a console that appears to be even or odd parity while getty is
running.  Once we get to login (when the password prompt appears) all
is well, but it will once again go funny when getty runs again after a
logout.
