just a data point:

when pk added the disabling disconnect/reselect and sync negotiation
options, i accidentally put them in my kernel configuration when i
merged.  this made my tape drive fail!  i haven't seen any problems
since i turned disconnect/reselect and sync neg. back on for all my
SCSI devices.
