everyother program seems to be ok -- it's just vi that does this.

sigh.  in the hope that i would get an insight in to the problem,
i ran screen with the intention of running vi in there.  but screen
caused the same panic.  and just 2 minutes ago i remembered getting
this same panic about a year ago when i had an ss1.

it also does *not* occur when the vi is run elsewhere.. seems to be
some strange interaction between the console and the kernel, or
something.

i'm going to build a kernel without RCONSOLE and see what it does.
