I have netbsd-5/sgimips as completely network-based install: tftpd for booting kernel, NFS for root fs. It works fine on my sgi o2. But Xfree give me error at X -configure stage:

Known problem, the MIPS-specific module loader in XFree86 is quite broken. It works in Xorg though. Also, wsfb on crmfb doesn't currently work anyway - wsfb expects a linear framebuffer which crmfb does not provide - it uses CRIME's native tiled format. You can use experimental X binaries from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/macallan/sgimips/
which provide quite a bit of hardware acceleration ( including xrender ) but still have some glitches. So far I didn't get around to fix that properly.

have fun
