crashed again, this time running 
ftp -o -
ftp://ftp.mrynet.com/pub/NetBSD/daily/sgimips-2-0-200408101152/source/sets/src.tgz
| tar xzvpf -


all that showed up on stderr was

/usr/src is an nfs mount, for the record.
