and then the machine reboots.
but then i removed my AppleCD 300i Plus (mfgr by sony, model number 
CDU55S-25) and ... it still failed.  same error, or at least, it looks 
the same.  i could diff them if anybody actually cares.

same hinv as usual, but this time w/o the cdrom drive.
