Actally, I may just need a frontal lobotomy (or it's dependent on the phase
of the moon).  I just built a kernel with the in-tree tools after nuking my
build directory and it booted without any problems; it may have been that 
last time I tried I had left-over object files from the pkgsrc cross-tools.
