   Uhm, have you tried to /etc/rc.d/xdm stop; /etc/rc.d/xdm start
   after the machine is otherwise fully up?


xdm mostly works -- i just can't type at it.  i don't run
xdm by default on that machine, so, i have infact run both
those commands in testing, multiple times...
